The OIE has been organising a series of training seminars for OIE National Focal Points within the framework of the Capacity-Building Programme for the Veterinary Services of OIE Member Countries. This seminar was the second one for the OIE National Focal Points for Animal Production Food Safety in the European region. The first seminar took place in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 2008.
The seminar was co-sponsored and co-organised by the OIE, the Department for Veterinary Public Health, Nutrition and Food Safety of the Ministry of Health of Italy and the Istituto Zooprofillattico Sperimentale della Lombardia e dell’Emilia Romagna (IZSLER). It was organised in English, with simultaneous translation into Russian.

The aims of this first seminar were to:

  • enhance participants’ knowledge and awareness of their field of expertise and their role as an OIE National Focal Point for Animal Production Food Safety
  • provide the participants with a variety of practical examples and experiences relevant to their responsibilities as National Focal Points for Animal Production Food Safety
  • provide information on the communication process with the OIE and with their colleagues from different countries, and on the collection/dissemination of food safety information at different levels (the national level, the international level, etc.).

The seminar was opened by Dr Monique Eloit (Deputy Director General of the OIE), Dr Romano Marabelli (Delegate of Italy to the OIE) and Dr Stefano Cinotti (General Director of IZSLER).

The programme included presentations on the OIE and the work of the OIE Animal Production Food Safety Working Group, salmonellosis in poultry, zoonotic parasites, the role of Reference Laboratories in Animal Production Food Safety, and case studies on the management of a food safety crisis and/or a zoonotic disease crisis. Representatives from Germany and Italy presented their countries’ experiences in implementing the OIE standards. For most of the participants, it was the first training that they had received in their position as an OIE National Focal Point for Animal Production Food Safety.

During the seminar and at the closing session, participants made very favourable comments about the content of the seminar, its format, organisation and usefulness for their professional activities and further communication with the OIE.
