First PVS Aquatic mission in sub-region

Today, on 26 October 2022, the PVS Evaluation of the Aquatic Animal Health Services (AAHS) mission begins in Kazakhstan that will last two weeks till 4 November. A team of independent experts, comprising Dr Geoff Grossel as Team Leader, Dr Sloboden Chokrevski as Technical Expert, Dr Stian Johnsen as Observer, and Dr Mario Latini as Trainee Expert will work with the country representatives to support them in strengthening its national Veterinary and Aquatic Animal Health Services.

The mission aims to support the country in increasing its aquaculture production in a sustainable way by identifying gaps and weaknesses (challenges) in the ability of the AAHS to comply with WOAH international standards, share a common vision with stakeholders, establish priorities and carry out strategic initiatives.

Fish production in Kazakhstan has increased from 0.7 to 6.9 thousand tons over the last five years and the industry currently employs about 11 thousand people. The Government has made a commitment to further increase the fish production in the country and the findings of the evaluation will be used to guide the AAHS in their work to develop the industry in a sustainable way.
