The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) Sub-Regional Representation (SRR) for Central Asia continues its fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through its activities. From April 24th till 28th, the SRR carried out several activities in Tajikistan as part of the AMR Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) project “Capacity building within One Health to support priority actions to combat antimicrobial resistance in Tajikistan” which included the participation of international experts from Italy and Turkey.

One of the activities involved a seminar on the “prudent use of antibiotics in livestock” for Tajik veterinary services. The latest news on antimicrobial resistance, from bacterial defense strategies to diagnosis, proper use in breeding, and strategies for controlling antimicrobial resistance were presented and discussed during the training. The event was attended by the Head of the Department for Veterinary and Animal Breeding of the Tajik Committee on Food Safety, Mr. Ismoil Andamov, and 30 other veterinarians.

Another activity involved a training session on biosecurity measures in bee farms. Biosecurity is an essential aspect of fighting antimicrobial resistance because it helps prevent the spread of diseases through proper management actions, ultimately reducing the use of antibiotics. The seminar highlighted the misuse of antibiotics in bee farms and discussed strategies to address it.

Throughout the events, significant awareness-raising activities on antibiotic resistance were carried out, including the distribution of WOAH materials on the topic translated into Tajik. These activities reflect WOAH’s continued efforts to combat AMR through the One Health approach that involves collaboration across different sectors and countries.
