WOAH's General Session side event on animal welfare in Europe

Header

Over the years, the Platform on Animal Welfare for Europe has identified five priority topics for animal welfare: management of dog population, transport, disaster management, working equids and slaughter. In each of these categories, the animals are, in particular cases, at risk regarding their mental and physical state. To prevent this, all of WOAH members have a key role to play towards assuring the welfare of animals. Every WOAH member’s contribution is one step forward. More specifically, WOAH has started developing the 4th action plan for 2024-2026. That is why, by doing this event on animal welfare, WOAH is offering its members the opportunity to be involved in the building of the 4th action plan and to allow their needs to be heard. Nowadays, One Health is taking more and more importance, because it not only links human and animal health, but it also links the environment. One Health is about finding the right balance between those three axes, by seeing how an action in one can truly impact another. By enhancing animal welfare, we enhance animal health, human health and environment.

The WOAH Observatory team will be attending the event, to exchange with WOAH Members on the challenges experienced in the implementation of standards regarding Animal Welfare during transport, as well as to present their work on the subject.
