In response to the evolving situation of Peste des Petits Ruminants and Lumpy Skin Disease in Europe, over 200 participants gathered virtually on 3 July 2025 for a technical webinar organized under the umbrella of the GF-TADs for Europe. Chaired by Dr Bernard Van Goethem, President of the GF-TADs Europe, the meeting brought together national veterinary authorities, EU Reference Laboratories, the European Commission (DG SANTE), FAO, WOAH, EFSA, and regional partners to share updates, lessons learned, and coordinate response measures.

Dr Mereke Taitubayev opened the session, noting the continued threat of transboundary animal diseases in Europe and the critical role of timely knowledge exchange. Key updates focused on recent PPR incursions in Albania, following major outbreaks in Greece and Romania in 2024, and the re-emergence of LSD in Sardinia, mainland Italy, and southeastern France, after several years of regional freedom from the disease.

Experts from affected countries provided detailed overviews of their surveillance efforts, control measures, and early lessons learned. The Reference Laboratories offered insights into disease diagnostics, genome sequencing, and challenges in tracing outbreaks. The European Commission highlighted emergency support mechanisms and emphasized the importance of regional coordination, rapid vaccination, and transparent communication.

FAO and WOAH representatives emphasized ongoing support to Member Countries, encompassing training and simulation exercises, laboratory capacity building, and policy guidance. The event reaffirmed the strength of the GF-TADs platform as a key regional mechanism for information exchange, early warning, and harmonized action against TADs.
