The WOAH Sub-Regional Office for Central Asia held a working meeting with the Islamic Organisation for Food Security (IOFS) to review ongoing cooperation and discuss priorities for future joint activities.
Opening the meeting, Dr Memduh Unal thanked Dr Mereke Taitubayev for his continued support to joint IOFS–WOAH efforts.
The two organisations discussed cooperation on aquatic animal health, transboundary animal diseases, and regional veterinary coordination. Particular attention was given to the proposed Central Asia Aquaculture Health activities, including an initial webinar and a follow-up training session. WOAH confirmed its readiness to support the initiative and suggested expanding its geographical scope.
Discussions also addressed the need to strengthen cooperation among Central Asian veterinary authorities and to develop practical regional initiatives. The parties considered possible technical support to countries on priority animal diseases, with PPR eradication highlighted as a potential basis for broader regional collaboration.
WOAH and IOFS further exchanged views on potential cooperation between Central Asia and the Middle East in animal health, livestock trade, and aquaculture. A dedicated regional meeting may be considered as part of the 2027 workplan.
Both parties agreed to continue coordination on the proposed activities, prepare the necessary concept documents, and identify further opportunities for joint implementation in 2026-2027.
