Advancing Harmonisation of Veterinary Education in Central Asia: Samarkand University Takes a Key Step Towards EAEVE Standards

Header

The Samarkand State University of Veterinary Medicine, Livestock and Biotechnology and the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE) have expressed its sincere gratitude to the WOAH Sub-Regional Representation (SRR) in Astana for its continuous assistance and guidance in advancing the internationalisation of veterinary education and exploring pathways towards alignment with EAEVE.

This engagement reflects WOAH’s broader commitment to supporting Veterinary Education Establishments (VEEs) in the region in strengthening the quality, relevance, and international recognition of veterinary training in line with global and regional standards.

A regional approach to harmonising veterinary education

In October 2025, WOAH successfully implemented a Regional Workshop on Harmonization of Veterinary Education: Aligning with WOAH Day-1 Competencies and Integrating One Health in Veterinary Curricula in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The workshop brought together VEEs from across the Region, along with representatives of EAEVE, fostering dialogue on quality assurance, competence-based education, and progressive alignment with international evaluation systems.

Building on this momentum, WOAH continues to support interested universities in the region that are willing to follow EAEVE standards and explore participation in the European System of Evaluation of Veterinary Training (ESEVT).

A milestone visit to Samarkand

An important step towards this objective took place on 14–16 January 2026, when Professor Pierre Lekeux, Director responsible for ESEVT and EAEVE, paid an official visit to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Samarkand State University of Veterinary Medicine, Livestock and Biotechnology.

During the visit, Professor Lekeux delivered the first on-site EAEVE Information Session in Central Asia, providing initial consultations and practical recommendations on:

  • launching the EAEVE/ESEVT accreditation process,
  • aligning the “Veterinary Medicine” study programme with European quality standards,
  • modernising curricula,
  • strengthening competence-based and research-driven learning,
  • and enhancing the international recognition of graduates.

The visit was met with strong engagement from university leadership, academic staff, and students, highlighting a clear commitment to continuous improvement and international cooperation.

Strengthening international cooperation and education quality

This landmark event represents a significant milestone in strengthening international cooperation in veterinary education, improving the quality of academic programmes, and increasing the competitiveness of veterinary graduates in Central Asia.

EAEVE welcomed the growing interest from the region and expressed its appreciation to Samarkand State University for the warm hospitality extended to Professor Lekeux. The Association looks forward to supporting the university on its international accreditation journey and to potentially welcoming it as a Full Member of the European veterinary education community in the future.

WOAH’s continued support

WOAH reaffirms its readiness to continue supporting VEEs across the region in their efforts to enhance education quality, align with international standards, and strengthen the veterinary workforce as a cornerstone of animal health systems and One Health implementation.
