Fundamental information

Header

Over the last fifty years, as the impact of the disease has grown, interest in international coordination has given rise to work on agreed standards on African Swine Fever in the WOAH Code on Terrestrial Animal health. Of specific interest is chapter 15 of the Terrestrial Code (evolving since 1968)

  • Defining susceptible species, providing a case definition, safe commodities,
  • Indicating elements for status determination, including for zones and for compartments (15.1.3 to 15.1.7),
  • Recommending conditions for importation for different commodities from free and non-free countries and zones (15.1.8 to 15.1.21),
  • Measures for inactivation (15.1.22 to 27,
  • Measures for surveillance (from 15.1.28).

This chapter is not a stand-alone element, it is based on several fundamental concepts contained in the WOAH Code on Terrestrial Animal Health, such as definitions, control of trade, regionalization, compartmentalization, along with surveillance.

Furthermore, Standards have also been designed to harmonise the reliability of diagnostic tests, and for prospective vaccines. They can be found in the WOAH Manual of Diagnostic Tests and Vaccines for Terrestrial Animals: ASF Chapter

On our Global Website ASF page, Members can find additional general information on the disease and its impact, regular situation reports (twice a month), advice for dedicated groups of stakeholders, and generic awareness raising materials.

On the dedicated page to the Standing Group of Experts on African Swine Fever for Europe, more information can be found on this group aiming at building up a closer cooperation among countries affected by African swine fever (ASF) and thereby, addressing the disease in a more collaborative and harmonized manner across Europe, including reports of the Standing Group on African Swine Fever, reports of the SGE Expert missions to countries affected with ASF, and recommendations of the SGE.

The ASF Technical Card provides more information on the disease, the aetiology of the virus, epidemiology, elements of diagnosis, prevention and control, reference and other information.

The EU webpage on ASF presents elements on the current situation, legislation on disease control measures, and links to the websites of Member States.
