SGE on PPR and SPGP

GF-TADs - Standing Group of Experts on PPR and SPGP in Europe

Header

Following the successful model of the Standing Groups of Experts (SGEs) established for Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), African Swine Fever (ASF), Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), and Rabies, a Standing Group of Experts on Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) and Sheep and Goats Pox (SPGP) has been established under the GF-TADs Europe framework.

The decision to establish this SGE was taken during the 1st GF-TADs Europe Conference, held in Belgrade in September 2025, reflecting the increasing regional importance of coordinated prevention, preparedness, and control of transboundary diseases affecting small ruminants.

The 1st online meeting of the Standing Group of Experts on PPR and SPGP was successfully organised on 5 March 2026, marking the official launch of the group’s technical activities.

Objectives

The Standing Group of Experts on PPR and SPGP aims to:

  • Facilitate regional coordination and information exchange on the epidemiological situation of PPR and SPGP;
  • Provide technical guidance and expert advice to countries on prevention, early detection, preparedness, and control strategies;
  • Support alignment with global and regional frameworks, including the PPR Global Eradication Programme;
  • Promote collaboration between veterinary services, laboratories, and relevant partners within the GF-TADs Europe framework.

Scope of Work

The SGE brings together international and regional experts, representatives of national veterinary services, and partners from relevant organisations to support evidence-based decision-making and strengthen regional resilience against PPR and SPGP.

The Standing Group operates as a technical and advisory platform, complementing existing disease-specific initiatives and contributing to the broader objectives of animal health protection, food security, and the One Health approach.

Participants of the SGE on PPR and SGPG (as of March 2026)

  • Countries: Delegates of 53 member countries and their experts
  • Organisations: Regional and sub-regional offices of FAO and WOAH in Europe, and DG SANTE
